Sins forgiven and then sins committed in Roma
From EUROTRIP in Rome, Italy on Nov 17 '10
Roma, Roma, Roma.... Mi amore Roma!!! Isabelle had been to Rome several times so she was our resident tour guide and boy did she do a good job. She took us to everysingle monument and what wa a change was that she could actually read a map, unlike me or Natalie. We managed to do all the neccessary touristy stuff like taking photos with the colloseum, chilling with the locals on the Spanish steps, eating lunch at the Pantheon and being swarmed by dirty pidgeons, walked down the designer street and looked in Gucci and Prada like we had money, visiting palaces, ruins and all the other ancient roman sites. We made a wish with a coin at the famous Fontana di Treve. Then Natalie and i told off some gypsys because they were using magnets attached to rods and collecting everyones coins from the fountain. All the hundreds of other derrick tourists at the fountain just looked at them and didnt say anything. But we didnt want the gypsys to steal our wish so we yelled at them until they left!! FUCKERS!!!
We would spend the whole day just strolling the streets of Rome. Rome is like a better, less wanky version of Paris. Its really trendy and there is soooo much to do. Not only is there an abundance of daytime activities but the Roman nightlife is HECTIC!! Friday night we headed to a bar street called Pyramide. From Pyramide we went to the supposedly best club in Italy called Room 26. Room 26 is so good that t costs 70 euros to just get into the club. But luckily we are con artists and we told some door bitch that we were on a list.... when she was scanning the list Natalie leant over read a name, whcih happened to be Erica and said.. Yep thats me Erica!! So in we all went for free instead of 70 euros!!! A backpacker has to do what they have to do!! Well Room 26 was a SWEET party i can see why they call it the best club in Italy. DJ Kevin Saundersan mashed some sweeeeet beats until dawn and ke danced the night away until we headed out into the day light and decided to call it a night or a morning....
We slept for a bit, but there was still more sightseeing to do. We headed to the Roman catacombs. This was some freaky shit and a bit too intense for a severe hangover. The catacombs are a church with about 10 rooms filled from wall to wal with bones and human bodies. The bones are arranged into weird catholic symbols and patterns. So there were pelvis bones, jaws, sculls, legs and arms arranged inpretty little patterns al over tese walls. What was even worse was that there were actua bodies, still with skin and stuf placed in weird positions. It was like a horror movie and was sooooo freaky. Way too intense. Who comes up with that shit??? We left saturday night to a make a family dinner and just have a quiet night at the hostel so then we were refreshed for sunday morning mass with the pope!!
we headed down to mass at the vatican with all the other good christians. The pope did his hail marys and i assume that all our sins were forgiven. We didnt watch the whole speach, just 30 minutes or so. Thats enough to have sins forgiven?? Turns out, and we didnt realise this at te time, that it was a special day at the vatican because it was the day OUR Mary ckillop was being cannonised. Well what do you know!!! after the pope it was time to get down to business and head to the other side of Rome for a very important event... te sunday vintage markets! This was dangerous for all us girls. None of us have money let alone room in our bags for anything. But we all managed to blow our budgets and compensate our baggage weight for some sweet vintage Itaian purchases!!!
Sunday night in Rome is a big party night so we put on our dancing shoes and headed out on the town. We got a train out to this club in the middle of nowhere, which we spent 40 minutes looking for because it was quite hidden. But when we found it, it was well worth it. We met some really cool Romans and hung out with them at the club and then went with them to an after party. It was a loooong night and we got back to our hostel at 9am. It was a pity that we had to check out of our hostel at 9.30am. So we struggled to pack our shit up and then we stagered onto a bus to head to the vatican to do our last bit of sightseeing before we left Rome. We planned on visiting the Sistin chapel but everyone was on their death beds and none of us had the mental or physical will power to stand in line for 3 hours to see the chapel. So we sat on the vatican steps (looking like death) and contemplated what to do.... meanwhile Isabelle fell asleep. The pope could not save us now. we were sinners for sure!!! We came to a conclusion that all we wanted was a bed and maccas. So we collected our bags from the hostel, headed to the train station, got maccas and got on a a train to Florence in search of a bed!!!
