Cape Tribulation

From June 2010 - Cairns & Port Douglas in Cape Tribulation, Australia on Jun 25 '10

Jackie & Dean has visited no places in Cape Tribulation

This was a full and fun day!  After picking up our hire car, we hit the road to Cape Tribulation with a full list of things to see.

We took the ferry across the Daintree River and stopped at the Daintree Icecream Company to sample some local icecream.  The flavours for the day were wattleseed (delicious!), soursop, raspberry and passionfruit.

We did plenty of rainforest boardwalking and were blown away by the gorgeous fauna and flora.  It's so lush and beautiful there.  We spotted a couple of large lizards at a picnic area next to one of the beaches.  They had clearly helped themselves to picnics in the past as they were very tenacious and difficult to shoo away.  We took a couple of photos but stayed well clear!

Cape Tribulation itself was lovely.  To think that we saw the place where Captain Cook's Endeavour ran aground on the Great Barrier Reef.  Cape Tribulation is a national park so there is no real centre as such.  We stopped at the "Friendly Grocery Store" (to be served by a not so friendly grocer!) and had a yummy picnic.  There are plenty of secluded places to stay around Cape Tribulation - perfect for a quiet getaway, some pampering or solitary reflection.

On our way back, we stopped in at a gallery and did some lovely beach walks.  I was intrigued by some really intricate designs in the sand.  As it turns out, crabs come out at low tide and collect sand to sift it in search of food between each grain.  When they have stripped the sand of any nutrition - inadvertently cleaning the sand! - they gather it into a ball and toss it away.  The amount of sand balls is amazing and you can tell from their sizes whether it was a big or a small crab that made it!

We also checked out Four Mile Beach before heading back to Port Douglas for a Thai dinner, some delicious cocktails and a movie.
